The Righteous Life

Psalm 1 gives the key to living a righteous life, then paints a picture about why the righteous life is worth living. The righteous life is distinguished by where you get counsel: from other people or from God. The secret is in verse 2:

[H]is delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

As I was reading through it the other day, something new struck me. This psalm says nothing about obedience; it’s about delight. Naturally, obedience will come out of that delight. But the ticket to a righteous life isn’t merely obedience.

The idea itself wasn’t new. The importance of the heart attitude is one of Jesus’ core teachings in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). But I appreciated noticing it in the Old Testament, too.
